The Institute of Energy for SE Europe (IENE) is organizing, once again, its annual conference now in its 25th edition. The conference will take place on December 1-2, 2021 and will be held at the Caravel Hotel in central Athens. Last year the conference did not take place because of the coronavirus pandemic. This year the conference will be held hybrid format so as to allow as many speakers and panelist to attend.
On July 27 the Institute released its latest Monthly Analysis, part of the SEE Energy Brief, which deals with the question of natural gas and its continuing integration in the region’s energy systems despite the ongoing crusade by the European Commission and its various executive branches, including the EIB,against further use of gas on account of its detrimental role in climate change mitigation. The analysis, titled “Is the future of Natural Gas in the EU at stake?” at first presents the background on EU’s attempts to exclude gas as a main fuel for power generation and then goes on to explain the compromise deal reached during the Portuguese presidency for major gas projects to retain their status as PCI’s under certain strict environmental conditions.
As Greece came out of the Covid pandemic lockdown and summer took hold a number of long overdue energy conferences were organised to which the Institute was invited to participate and express its views on a number of critical issues. On July 29 IENE’s chairman, Costis Stambolis, was an invited keynote speaker in the AHEPA annual convention in Athens where he presented an all round view on “Greece’s Key Strategy Energy Challenges”. In his presentation Stambolis stressed the changing energy mix and the country’s increased dependence on imported gas and hence the need for increasing indigenous energy production both from conventional and renewable resources.
Upon the invitation of the AHEPA supreme council the Chairman and Executive Director of IENE, Mr. Costis Stambolis, participated in their annual convention, which was held in Athens on July 29, and delivered a key note address on the Key Strategic Choises for Greece’s Energy Sector. In his opening remarks the chairman of IENE discussed the energy and geopolitical position of Greece in a SE European context and how the country thanks to its advanced economy and extended energy infrastructure can provide an energy viaduct for the entire SEE region.
On July 14 the European Commission unveiled its along awaited plan to cut EU’s carbon footprint known as “Fit-for-55”. The plan aims for the EU to become the world’s first mover on achieving net-zero emissions to limit global warming, with a strategy targeting all sectors of the economy.
Τhe Annual Report (AR) of the Institute, which was approved at IENE’s Annual General Meeting held on June 30, aims to provide accurate and comprehensive information on the Institute of Energy for South-East Europe (IENE) and its activities and is primarily addressed to its Partners.
On June 30 & July 1, the US based Euroconvention Global organization organized a highly topical Conference to examine the Greek renewable market, which is undergoing rapid development. This two-day long highly focused event attracted more than 150 participants from Greece, other European countries and from the USA.
More than 25 partners participated in the 33d General Assembly of Partners of the Institute of Energy for SE Europe (IENE) which took place online, via zoom, on June 30th. Following approval of the Institute’s Annual Report which was presented by the outgoing chairman Mr. Costis Stambolis, and also included the financial statement for the year 2020, the partners proceeded with the election of a new Executive Committee since the term of the present one ended in July.
In view of the growing interest in CO2 re use and the pressing environmental problems which Greece and the SE European region faces on account of Green House Gas Emissions and the lack of well coordinated studies and roadmaps the Institute has taken the initiative to organise a comprehensive study in this respect.
In April this year, IENE completed a major study which it had undertaken on behalf of Greece’s Independent Transmission Electricity Operator (IPTO). The study examined the integration of energy storage systems in the electricity system of Crete, which is Greece’s largest island, and has an autonomous electricity system powered by oil fired generation units.
Leveraging its accumulated knowledge and experience in the energy sector as well as its close links with the energy community, IENE has placed education at the center of its activities. Over the last 12 months, IENE has managed to develop a series of high level educational courses responding to the needs of energy professionals and companies. These courses cover specialized areas such as electricity markets, Renewable Energy Sources (RES), energy efficiency, digitization, gas markets and more.
25 senior business executives and experts from 10 different countries discussed the advances and new market dynamics of natural gas in Southeast Europe, in a series of highly enlightening sessions that took place within the framework of IENE's Webinar "Gas Markets in Transition in SE Europe". The online event was broadcast via livestreaming on Tuesday, June 8, 2021, attracting numerous participants.
In view of the highly successful Webinar which the Institute organised on June 8 a background paper was prepared and send to all participants in advance. This paper entitled “Gas Markets in Transition in SE Europe” has now been posted on IENE’s website under Publications and makes interesting reading.
The prospects and challenges of the gas market in Southeast Europe will be at the heart of IENE’s latest online workshop titled "Gas Markets in Transition in SE Europe", which will take place on Tuesday, June 8, between 13:00 – 18:00 (Athens time), via livestreaming.
Analysis of major global and regional energy issues as well as the timely news analysis of current developments has been a mainstay of IENE’s work. Over the years the Institute has provided useful analysis contributed mostly by its partners and its scientific personnel, and lately from a growing number of visiting research fellows and associates.
As part of its mandate and its regional overreach the Institute is backing the “All Things Energy Forum”. This is a major and unique digital forum aiming to unite energy producers, consumers, associated service industries, and government agencies in order to examine the energy transition, alongside a pandemic and a faltering economy is to be held next week, on June 2-4.
On May 21 released its Briefing Note No. 12 entitled “Energy Taxonomy Poses Serious Challenges to EU’s Economy” which was sent to its Members on the same day. This latest Briefing Note deals with the “hot” subject of the creation of a common classification system for sustainable economic activities, known as “EU taxonomy”.
As part of its events’ programme, IENE will be organizing a half-day online workshop entitled “Gas Markets in Transition in SE Europe”, which will take place on Tuesday, June 8, between 13:00 – 18:00 (Athens time), via livestreaming
