Hydrocarbons will continue to be a key component of the energy mix at global and European level, including Greece, for several years to come, according to a Special Report prepared by IENE on the “Economic and Geopolitical Benefits of Hydrocarbon Exploitation in Greece”, which was released and presented at an online press conference on Monday, April 18.
On Tuesday, April 12, the Institute of Energy of Southeast Europe (IENE) organized a webinar on "Solid Waste and Energy", which focused on the solutions and opportunities to transform the management of municipal waste in Greece from a problem into an opportunity for wider development.
On Monday, April 11, the Institute uploaded on its site (IENE.gr) a major report prepared by its research staff in close cooperation with the Hydrocarbons (upstream) Committee of IENE which is chaired by Ms. Teresa Fokianou.
Following a well attended press conference held yesterday in Athens, where the Institute presented its recently released flagship publication, the “SEE Energy Outlook 2021/2022”, to Greek and foreign journalists IENE has now confirmed plans for two new roadshows in the region in order to promote the “Outlook” study.

Over the last 50 years or so the EU and Europe in general have become over dependent on Russian oil, gas and coal imports.
As gas is increasingly becoming a main stay in the overall energy equation the need for vital and accurate information on gas use and markets in SE Europe is of paramount importance. Hence, it was decided by IENE’s management team to expand the current,weekly, newsletter on electricity markets so as to include gas. Efforts to include reporting on gas commenced in late February but it was only on last Wednesday that the preparation of a proper issue became possible.
Following publication of the Institute’s major energy study of SE Europe and its official presentation in Athens (1/3) and Sofia (8/3), a flood of congratulatory and support messages has come through from colleagues and friends from almost all countries in the region and beyond. The Institute of Energy of SE Europe (IENE) recently completed a special study commissioned by Greece’s Energy Regulatory Authority (RAE) in order to examine the feasibility of expanding the national gas transmission system to Western Greece, primarily by pipeline, focusing on the regions of Epirus and Western Greece. A major part of the study is devoted in the cost comparison between network expansion through pipeline and introduction via LNG or CNG.
Following two years of intensive preparation and research, this major IENE study, the “South East Europe Energy Outlook 2021/2022”, has been completed. The publication, released both in printed and digital form, consists of 15 chapters and 1,402 pages. The Study was presented for the first time in a special event held at the Athens Exchange on Tuesday, March 1, with the backing of the Hellenic Energy Exchange (ENEX).

As the possibility of war and of a full-blown Russian invasion in Ukraine looms high -especially after yesterday’s recognition of Ukraine’s breakaway republics by Russia- fears are growing that Russian gas supplies to several European countries are under threat. These fears are not unjustified given that 22% of the 168,5 Bcm that Russia delivered to the wider European market last year went through pipelines crossing Ukraine.
