Following an invitation to IENE’s chairman by the recently established Vienna International Institute for Middle East Studies (VIIMES), the Institute actively participated in the inaugural meeting of VIIMES which was held online on Monday, June 27. The meeting was held at senior experts level on the subject of “The Ukraine crisis and the geopolitics of energy in the Middle East”.
In its latest Monthly Analysis of May 2022 IENE raises the issue of whether the EU sanctions against Russia are working. More specifically, the United States, the European Commission and their allies imposed unprecedented economic sanctions on Russia in the wake of its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, starting on February 24, 2022.
On Monday, June 20th, IENE released its "IENE News" newsletter (2020-2021 edition, Issue No.8), which covers the Institute's activities for the period 2020-2021. The previous issue was published in the Fall 2019. As explained in the Editorial, signed by the Institute’s Chairman, the current issue was produced with considerable delay on account of the operational difficulties imposed by the two yearlong pandemic.
"Energy Security, Energy Market Integration and Sustainability in SE Europe" was the key theme of this year's SEE Energy Dialogue, which focused on the serious challenges facing the energy sector in the wider SE European region.
Earlier today the Institute uploaded on its website, but also on the microsite of the Energy Dialogue, the Background Paper which it prepared on the occasion of the conference. The Paper, entitled “Energy Security, Market Integration and Sustainability in SE Europe” covers the wide range of subjects which were discussed at length in the conference.
The town of Thessaloniki is getting ready to welcome IENE’s annual SEE Energy Dialogue conference after an absence of nearly three years. Preparations are now moving at break speed rate as the Institute is getting ready to welcome some 65 speakers, moderators and panelists at the Met Hotel where the event will take place. Almost one third of the speakers will join online in what is turning out to be a major hybrid event with more than 200 participants attending in total.
The 13th SEE Energy Dialogue, organized by the Institute for Energy of Southeast Europe (IENE), is taking place in hybrid form in Thessaloniki, on June 16 & 17, supported by some of the leading energy groups in the country and the wider region of Southeast Europe.

In 2020 IENE introduced its series of Fact Sheets which aim to present in a comprehensive yet concise manner a broad range of subjects related to the energy sector in SE Europe. Following the publication in April 2020 of its latest Fact Sheet on SEE Electricity, today the Institute present its new Fact Sheet which deals with Gas Markets in Europe and the Russian-Ukraine Conflict.

The purpose of this regional forum, which is being organized by IENE with the support of leading international and regional organizations and major energy companies, is to bring together high-ranking government officials, senior business executives and energy experts from all countries of S.E. Europe and beyond.
The fourth in the row public presentation of IENE’s major reference study, the “ The SEE Energy Outlook 2021/2022” is to take place in Istanbul, Turkey’s biggest city and top commercial center, next Tuesday, May 24. The event is organised in association with the region’s leading energy exchange, Energy Exchange Istanbul (EPIAS) (aşyoncası Sokak No:1/F F2 Blok, 34485 Sarıyer, Istanbul) where it will be hosted and will start at 14:00 according to the presentation programme (see here).
In a well organised event held in association with Serbia’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry last Wednesday (11/5) in Belgrade, the Institute presented its flagship publication, the “SEE Energy Outlook 2012/2022” to a packed audience. More than 100 energy professionals and senior executives from Serbia’s buoyant energy sector participated in this two and a half hour event which was sponsored by SEEPEX, Serbia’s South East European Power Exchange.
Following an invitation by the organisers the Chairman and Executive Director of IENE participated once again in "Flame", Europe’s biggest and most influential energy and gas conference. The conference took place as usual at the Okura Hotel in Amsterdam from May 3-5. Inevitably a fair amount of presentations and panel discussions evolved around energy security and the gas supply gap emerging across Europe as a result of EU’s sanctions against Russia.
The third in the row public presentation of IENE’s major reference study, the “ The SEE Energy Outlook 2021/2022” is to take place in Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, next Wednesday, May 11.
IENE has just released a new Working Paper, entitled “The Hellenic countries’ role in the new Eastern Mediterranean-Persian Gulf geostrategic ‘Great Game’ and Region-Building”, authored by Dr. Thrassy Marketos, an IENE Visiting Research Fellow. Dealing with the geostrategic issue of the role of the Greek countries in the new Eastern Mediterranean-Persian Gulf Region, this newly published Working Paper (No. 32).
